DocuWare history: success since day one

DocuWare was founded in 1988 by Jürgen Biffar in Germering (Germany) as DOCUNET and renamed as DocuWare in 2000. From 1990 on, Jürgen Biffar managed the company together with Thomas Schneck. The company‘s headquarters are located in Germering, Germany. The US office is based in Beacon, New York. In August 2013, DocuWare acquired Westbrook Technologies Inc. (developer of ECM software Fortis). In 2014, Westbrook Technologies Inc. was merged with DocuWare Corporation, its US subsidiary.

In 2007, the company’s consolidated revenue exceeded the 10 million € mark for the first time; in 2020 Fiscal Year, it was 62,21 million €. At the beginning of 2020, DocuWare had nearly 400 employees worldwide.

Right from the start, the company was focused on developing a document management system that is easy to implement and intuitive to use. DocuWare solutions for digital document management and workflow automation are now sold in 18 languages in 100+ countries. Sales are generated through a global network of more than 750 Partners, which continues to expand.

In 2012, the company introduced its first DMS as Software as a Service (SaaS). With the launch of DocuWare Cloud in 2015, the company continued to take a pioneering role in cloud-based solutions in the ECM sector. DocuWare is available as both an On-Premises and Cloud solution with identical features and design.

By 2017, 50 percent of new customers opted for the Cloud-based solution – a trend that is still rising. Since 2018, pre-configured Cloud packages were added, which can be fully implemented within three days. The company currently has data centers in Europe, USA and Japan.

On January 1, 2019, Dr. Michael Berger, previously DocuWare‘s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Max Ertl, formerly its Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), took over the management of the company. In August 2019, DocuWare was acquired by Ricoh. As a 100 percent subsidiary, DocuWare remains independent and continues to focus on developing its proven ECM solutions and expanding its global partner network.

Today, DocuWare is recognized by customers, partners and leading market analysis companies, such as Gartner and Nucleus, as the top solution for document management and workflow automation for teams and companies of all sizes.
