Accessibility is distinct from flexibility of access. Cloud and mobile capabilities, for example, allow employees to work across locations and devices. They are an important part of a modern digital workplace, even though they are not accessibility features in themselves. Together, these capabilities make software more adaptable to different working conditions rather than placing the burden of adaptation on the user.

The value of inclusive software

According to Eurostat statistics from 2025, the unemployment rate for people with a severe disability was nearly double that of people without a disability — and 45% of those people had been unemployed for 12 months or longer. Accessible software removes barriers and enables more people to participate in digital work — meaning that organizations have a larger talent pool to choose from.

Established standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 provide a practical framework for translating accessibility principles into concrete design and development decisions. When software is designed according to these standards, it ensures that users can interact with the software in different ways, so it accommodates a wider range of needs.

This flexibility also contributes to long-term business resilience. Software that supports different modes of interaction will be able to adapt flexibly to whatever the future may bring. This can help organisations maintain critical processes and adapt their digital environments as technology evolves.

A 5-point checklist for evaluating your business software

Many businesses find themselves asking if they need to add new functionality to their tech stack to stay ahead of the game. But that isn’t always necessary. A useful first step is to evaluate whether your existing tools are actually useable enough to be effective. Ask these five questions:

  1. Is navigation intuitive and consistent? Users should be able to move through the application and complete tasks without having to think about new interaction patterns each time.

  2. Can users find what they need? Information and functionality should be easy to find, without requiring users to understand the system’s underlying structure.

  3. Is the interface clutter-free and accessible across devices? Core workflows should remain clear and usable whether people work from a desktop, tablet or mobile device.

  4. Are core features accessible without advanced training? Staff should be able to become productive without extensive instruction or relying on workarounds.

  5. Do accessibility options support different user needs? Consider keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility and other features that remove barriers to use.

If the answer to several of these questions is no, the problem you’re facing may not be a lack of functionality. It could be that the software itself is making work harder than it needs to be. New software shouldn’t be added just for the sake of having new software, but rather to ensure that the tools staff rely on truly fit into their daily routines. 

A better digital experience starts with the way people work

The next generation of business software will not be defined by features alone. It will be defined by how naturally and consistently people use it. Intuitive interfaces, accessible design and flexible access remove complexity from everyday workflows. For organisations, that means faster adoption, fewer errors and greater returns from their technology investments.

The question for business leaders is not only “What can our software do?” but “How easily can our people use it?” —  and more importantly, do they?
